Profile
Association of Empowered PWD Philippines, Inc. (AEPPI) formerly known as Samahan ng mga may Kapansanan ng San Vicente, San Pedro, Laguna, Inc. since November 2014 .is an organization of people with disabilities (PWDs), families and relatives of PWDs and individuals and group that are committed to serve and help PWDs become productive members of the community.
AEPPI has done several activities for its PWD members such as introduction and implementation of livelihood activities, i.e. beads accessories making and soap making. It has also facilitated annual attendance to Special Sport's Olympic for PWD organized by the Kiwanis International Group in Quezon City and has successfully conducted 2014 Summer Class for Children with Disability that was attended by more than 50 children. The summer class includes activities on arts and painting, dancing and aerobics as well as sports activities. Likewise, Christmas package gift giving was also done in December through the sponsorship of Barangay San Vicente that benefited 200 plus PWD and together with students of SPCBA also donated some gifts to children during the Christmas Party celebration that was also supported by different organizations and groups. Several PWD members were also given wheelchairs received from donors facilitated by the AEPPI volunteers.
As of December 2014, the organization has established networks of 10 Barangay Chapters with a total of about 300 plus PWD members.
The organization is governed by the Board of Trustees that are elected by the General Assembly. The number of Board of Trustees is 15 the representation of which is from: five active PWDs, five PWD relatives and five abled individuals that are willing and committed to serve the organization. The Board of Trustees formulate policies and oversee the organization’s activities. Each member of the Board serves a term of two years.
The ASSOCIATION OF EMPOWERED PWD PHILIPPINES, INC. of the City of San Pedro, Laguna Province with its new name is an opportunity for the officers and members to reinvent the organization to the current situation of the disability sector in the region.
People with disability in San Pedro has been organized since 2005 with the initiative of one barangay and eventually evolved to include the whole city. To avoid ambiguity with the name and reflect the coverage of the association it was changed from Samahan ng mga may Kapansanan ng San Vicente Inc. to its current name.
San Pedro City is a 3rd class city composed of 20 barangay (township) with over 200,000population and 1.56% are people with disability. As President, I am responsible to oversee the activities of the group and its membership.
In the past we did:
• Livelihood training on accessory making using crystal beads and liquid soap / dish washing production
• Summer class for children with disabilities – art class and craft making
• Participation in sports events organized by partners
• Medical mission and feeding programs
From this year 2015 the association will do more
• Advocacy
• Training for parents
• Disability awareness
• Livelihood
• Capacity building for officers and members
• Support Services
Challenges for people with disability and the population of San Pedro is the lack of information about disability which makes advocacy difficult. Rehabilitation services are not available in public hospitals and are expensive as private services. There are only 2 public SPED school, not enough to accommodate all children with disability. Public spaces, buildings and transportation are not safe and not accessible making it difficult for people with disability to move freely. Compounded by the lack of financial resources to implement projects directed towards disability and development. Government subsidized funding stipulated in the law are available but not easily accessible due to lack of transparency on systems and procedures to the public.
We hope that through the effort of the Association with the help of its partners succeed in alleviating some of the problems faced by people with disabilities and their families in the future.
